WRITER | SEEKER | DREAMER

Hello there! Welcome to the elm co. A digital manuscript of sorts; writing life exposed.

the elm co. is my place of free expression and exploration of ideas, a sharing of life journeys and writing as a passion. This place combines my love of writing about cooking, old books, philosophy, sci-fi and exploration of mindful and intentional living. I get it, that’s a weird mix, and goes against all theory to stick to a theme. But as people, we’re not just one thing, we’re multi-dimensional, complex beings – so this blog is a manifestation of that.

I am…  a writer, a mother, a country girl living in Brisbane. My day job is in Marketing and Communications where I’ve forged a career creating and weaving stories that are not my own. I’ve specialised in technical writing, from engineering to healthcare; so creative writing is an old friend who has been locked away quite mercilessly whilst life happened!

I am passionate about exploring the voices of women, from reading Violet Paget’s (Vernon Lee) Rome to crafting stories featuring female heroines and the matriarchs in my own life. For too long texts have been written by men for men, and enough is enough. The more female writers who share their voice, the more chance we have of creating change for the future generations; where women are seen, heard and equally valued.

I am imperfect, a work in progress; so not everything I write will be great, some will be absolute rubbish. But hopefully some will move mountains and tears.

I love… blank note books and the feeling of the rushing wind which comes before storms. I love my kids (but don’t always love parenting) and the self published mini-books they write. I love silence and being alone…but always welcome a cocktail or two with my dearest friends. I love writing and the idea that words can survive the test of time, be passed down and leave a glimpse of the person who wrote them.

I am dedicated… to writing for my much loved Great Aunty Jean, who always wanted to be a writer. Aunty Jean was one of the only women in my family given the privilege of going to high school, she was sharp-witted and funny, a talented baker and gardener and during her younger years, had a few short stories published in the Women’s Weekly magazine. Although I know she was proud of her achievement, she craved to be a real writer. However, I feel, that in her heart and soul she was a real writer. She thought, saw and embraced the beauty of life (despite its hardships) with the vision of a writer.

This is something I recognise so deeply now that she is gone, being a writer is not just about being published, it is about how you feel the world.   The greatest gift Aunty Jean gave me was the feeling of being seen; she saw the way I looked at and experienced the world, because she felt it too. A world experienced in words.  To me, writing, is a dedication to her, but also to all women who were born at a time when their potential would never be fully realised.

Thank you for joining me as I leap into the unknown. x Emma.
